Hairbows, A Treatise

I had a commenter the other day who said she didn’t understand the appeal for hairbows and it just added time to the morning routine and who would want to do such a thing as that?
Honestly? I would! Because they are pretty.
But it’s more than that. Without getting too philosophical, though, I think it’s a good thing to fuss over our children a little bit, maybe even especially over our little girls. Let them have and wear pretty things… Show them in small ways that they are special and are tenderly loved… A tiny way of bestowing good things on them as well as perhaps teaching them that masculinity and femininity are different and each should be celebrated, albeit in different ways.
Obviously we teach them inner beauty is of greater importance – that goes without saying – but outward adornments are just that. They can adorn and enhance. To me the hairbow is that little touch that says, “I love you and here’s a little kiss to your outfit today. You are worth the extra thirty seconds of my morning time.”
Now. Does Madeline wear a bow in her hair every single day? Of course not. I don’t do my hair every single day. Sometimes I’m lucky if I get her hair clipped back before she smears it with egg yolk. And other days it’s stuffed into a ponytail while she runs around the playground like a wild child.
And I’m also not saying that if you don’t put bows in your daughters’ hair, you don’t love them. I’m merely talking about my own particular relationship(s) with my own particular daughter(s).
Well, and also I use them because they are simply a whole lot of fun.

I hope I get a little girl someday, because I’d be right there with ya. They’re so fun! I just get to adorn my boy with hearing equipment. Not nearly as pretty. :D
Oh I love it. You make me laugh. But I guess I feel the same way you do.
My mom use to french braid, french twist, double french braid, side-pony-tail, braided crown, and all sorts of things… and all before school! And, of course, all were “garnished” with a bow! It’s a little girly, feminine, lovely, southern touch!
You can imagine how my heart ached when my daughter cut off all her hair (well, okay, she cut her bangs to the scalp and a couple strands in the back which FORCED me to snip it all into a pixie style ‘do). It’s finally long enough to really DO something with!
Hairbows are one reason why I wanted a little girl. My sister does my nieces’ hair so cute and I couldn’t wait to have a little girl to put bows on myself. And now I’m getting one! I always notice children’s hair and it’s hard for me to not make it a reflection on the parent. It seems that well groomed parents have well groomed children. I’m sure that’s not always the case but it’s hard to look past when a kid just really needs a haircut!!!

I think Brite could make them for ALL of us! I wish she would! (Although I would miss the hectic trips of our family’s running through the mall in hopes of seeing “The HairBow Man” faithfully sitting at his wife’s kiosk!)
Moriah, I think you worded it beautifully! We do it to assure our little girls and the rest of the world that we love that little attention to detail (even if half of their thin hair won’t stay in the bow!) that we love them as God made them….little treasures of femininity!
Enjoy doing it while you still have “some” say in their outfit or what you put in their hair!
This was so very sweet. I feel the same way and didn’t even realize it! I am amazed everyday by something new that my little girl does that is so very different than boys. And she’s just a baby! But just the way she sounds or moves… it’s amazing and so girlish. And I love it!
