My Genius Idea

By Moriah on May 31st, 2008

(***I’m going to re-post/link this to WFMW in case it might be a helpful idea for another mom of youngish kids.)

(I don’t know why this took me so long to figure out!)

When we were driving up to the airport to fly home after our recent trip, I stopped in at Wal-mart for some last-minute snacks, small toys and books to keep the kids entertained. (Since there would be no movies. Traumatic, I know.) One of the books (which has turned into Drew’s current favorite) was an activity board book that came with its own dry-erase marker. It’s about cars, trucks, and boats, which shouldn’t surprise anyone.

Anyway, over the last week the kids have LOVED marking up their books and wiping it off. And then the light bulb went off in my head! I promptly ran to Target and bought them each their very own dry-erase board and a set of markers.

First day:

Getting the hang of it:

Art school, here we come.

Cleanin’:

Drew: “Look, Mom, I’m drawin’ a snake!”

Keeps ‘em occupied. For several minutes in a row, even.

And the best part is, unlike a coloring book that gets used up and pages ripped out, this is reusable and is one sturdy piece.

GREAT idea – I’m gonna get my 8 yo one! Although I think my teenagers would turn up their noses….

You’re genius! Hey, if you don’t have a stainless steel refrigerator, you can use that as a dry erase surface too. Just test it first to make sure that it will come off, and you may need some windex or other spray cleaner. DON’T try it on stainless. Hey…here’s a link with more info.

Dry erase boards have been my friends for some time now. I save them for times when I need three toddlers to be quiet and calm (think waiting at the doctor’s office). But just one question. Does anyone know how to get dry erase marker out of clothing? If I can find an answer to that question – the dry erase boards might be my new BEST friends!! :)

I teach kindergarten and we use those all the time in class to teach letters and numbers, etc. For Christmas, we had dry erase boards cut at Home Depot and wrapped them up with a few markers and gave them as presents from my assistant and me to the kids. They LOVED them!!

I too think this is a great idea.

I have purchased D.E. boards for the kids in their rooms… but never in the car. I’ll get right on that.

Thanks for letting me stop by-

My 3 year old loves drawing on the one in my classroom, but I have such fear of him marking other surfaces, so I’ve never braved one at home. Maybe I’ll try it.

My kids love dry erase boards. My youngest received an easel for Xmas one year & it has the dry erase & the chalk board. I had both my girls fighting over it, so I bought my oldest a dry erase board of her own, lol.
