Adventures in Grocery Shopping
I took the kids, post nap, to Wal-mart yesterday for my usual mix of groceries, wipes, lipstick, and beach towels. (Somehow we only had two beach towels this year and for a family of five, that is just not enough. And they were even on clearance!)
All the school supplies are now out, so I thought I’d also take advantage of the promotional prices and bought Drew and Madeline each a lunch pail. (Because every time we go on a playdate where we’re supposed to bring our own lunch, I’m forced to use a plastic shopping sack. Like, so un-cool, Mom.)
So we were standing in the school supply aisle browsing lunch pails and spiral-bound notebooks (because I can’t find mine), Adelaide was perched more or less happily in the front seat of the cart (buckled in, don’t worry) and Madeline was “riding” on the outer side. And then Drew jumped on board next to her.
Apparently empty carts at Wal-mart aren’t made to withstand 60+ combined pounds of toddler jumping on one side. The entire cart toppled over, pinning the two of them underneath and sending Adelaide for quite the wild ride. No one was hurt, just a little dazed.
And yes, there happened to be witnesses. As usual.
Fast forward to this morning. We were out of milk (rice, in case you’re wondering), so I made a quick trip to the local grocery store to get some. (Adelaide’s nap looming in the not-so-distant future.)
(Yes, I take my naptimes very seriously. It’s the only time of day I don’t have to share my sweet tea and chips n’ salsa. Or chips n’ guacamole, as the case was today.)
Anyway, my kids love riding around in those carts made to look like big plastic cars. (You know the ones nearly the length of a tractor trailer? Yeah, those.) Unfortunately for me, there is only room in the “car” for two kids, and only two buckles. Either I had to rest Adelaide on the front bar or carry her outright since today I came unprepared (i.e. without a sling).
(Sidenote. Putting her in the basket part with the food is entirely out of the question, unless I want my groceries ripped to shreds and teeth marks in all the bananas. I am so not kidding.)
This morning’s trip was fairly quick and painless. I used the self check-out since it’s almost always guaranteed to be faster (this being the chatty South and all).
I looked back as I was swiping my debit card in time to catch Drew standing on his tip-toes on the very top front bar of the cart reaching for a helium balloon.
GET DOWN YOUNG MAN!!!
Tell me, do they ever learn?

Well, I am very, very glad to know the WalMart cart limitations, since riding side saddle is my kids’ new favorite hobby.
Tip: don’t let them ride in the bottom part of the cart. Unless you want your child’s blood dripping down aisle 5 and his finger gashed open. And his screams to pierce the air of Randalls only to be quelled by the purchase of a hot wheels monster truck.
Just a suggestion.

Oh my goodness. I’m glad they were okay, but I would have been freaking out…especially at the balloon-reaching boy!
I laughed at the “chatty South” comment. That is SO true. :)
OK, the first line had me in awe…Wal-mart with the kids…you are a saint.
A saint who might want to add a margarita to that Chips and Guacamole after a morning like yours…
Yes, they do. When Drew is 17, he will not be standing on the front rail of the shopping cart. He will be standing on the top of his car. While its moving.
Ditto on not letting them ride in the bottom of the cart. My DD’s hair got wound around the wheel, finally came out in a huge, black, greasy wad, and necessitated a hair cut :(
Wow! What a brave woman you are! That’s exactly why I’m dropping my 2 off at my friend’s house today while I go grocery shopping.
I’m just waiting until I have enough children to have adventures like this happen to me…then I think I’ll blog too. just think, it doesn’t take Amazonian vine climbing to give your family such rides.
You really have me in stitches almost EVERY time you blog. I love your honesty!
Man, I hope you have good insurance on your young-un’s! They are so accident prone! I hate those damn car-carts! And even worse, the little carts made just for little kids. Yeah, great idea, give a clumsy kid with way too much energy a steel basket on wheels to push around in public and run over unsuspecting shoppers. Great idea! They should at least make sure they have enough for everyone!
Oh my WORD!!! Read my post from yesterday. Suffice it to say, I feel your pain!
I hate those shopping carts, too. On purpose, I park clear across the parking lot in order to enter through a door on the opposite side of those dang carts. I dont know why anyone thought they were a good idea.
Oh girl! I am so glad they are ok!
