It’s the little things.

By Moriah on January 7th, 2010

A couple of years ago I bought a laundry sorter and it has served me well. I’m a stickler when it comes to separating and washing whites, colors, and darks (even pickier than my mother) and I’ve always appreciated having a load ready to go without having to wade through all the laundry to figure out what I have.

It’s been driving me crazy though, more recently, since the mesh separators have all ripped and the sides were also seeing their last days:

(Sidenote: the tearing was more likely from children climbing into the unit. I do not have particularly heavy laundry.)

Not to mention it’s made of this coated fabric stuff (read: non-breathable) that had molded in some spots on the bottom. Ew, I know.  Oh, and the separators didn’t even go all the way to the bottom so things like bitty baby socks would roll into the wrong section.  (Which the Type A in me found irritating.)

So, all that to say, I’ve been wanting to change it for a while. I went to the fabric store and bought a few yards of white denim and then finally figured out a plan of action. It took me two days to finish but I am THRILLED with the end result.

(And yeah, with the cost of fabric and supplies, I could have bought a new one. But I would have been in the same predicament two years from now and frankly, my version is a million times better.  And it holds a lot more volume.)  (Which the lazy Type B in me loves.)

Back in its home in the laundry room, (and filling up fast):

Like I said, it’s the little things.

Wow, I’m so impressed. I can sew but my mind has a hard time figuring out the logistics of making something with no pattern….it probably would have taken me a week to do! I agree that little organizational fixes like this around the house make a world of difference.

I do not see this as a “little thing”!!!

You go girl!! I had to chuckle at us!! I need a pattern, a recipe…you have such ingenuity! And…it looks so professional. I’m so very proud of you. Mom

Wow. Usually I get as far as the idea, purchasing fabric and cutting out some parts. I am so impressed with someone who FINISHES the job and it works. Looks great and now I have to get off-line and go finish a project. You’ve motivated me. :)

Go girl! You’re amazing :) That looks SO useful and well-made. Now, can you discuss that funny round thing hanging above it in the laundry room? Never seen one of those.

Oh, I am totally in awe of your mad sewing skills!
What an awesome way to reuse and recycle what you already had!

I’ve always heard the sorter is a good idea. I would just need one in each kids room and my bedroom. If I don’t have a hamper almost immediately where my family drop their drawers, they don’t seem to get in any hamper and THAT really drives me.

Janel- I absolutely have a hamper in every room. I use the sorter when I dump the hampers out (try to do that daily, but doesn’t happen). It sort of pools the laundry into categories, from the various rooms.

Hey that is really cool. Too bad you can’t sell those.

Amazing Moriah! I am super impressed you did this with no pattern. I mean it seems to be fairly easy construction being basically a box but with the dividers and ties it would complicate it some. Nice job!

Maybe I have been living in a hole, but I have never seen one of those sorter thingies. But now my I have GOT to get one. :) It looks like a great replacement for the stacks of laundry baskets I have in my garage, which always have half of one load and half of another in them. Do you remember where you got yours? It looks like a good size for the space I’m thinking of.

That is genius, Moriah. My sorting method is piles on the laundry room floor. I think I need one of these…but of course the store version won’t work now…I need the custom variety.
