It rained. I sewed.
I don’t typically shop for dresses while I’m nursing because, well, they just don’t (usually) work. I’ve been wearing a lot of pants to church, with the occasional skirt thrown in for good measure. (But mostly pants.)
Which makes me a little sad because I LURVE a good dress.
So I was thrilled to find this dress from Target because it is a button-down “shirt dress.” (Great minds think alike, my fellow-nursing friend Sarah also bought one!)
(We don’t go to the same church, otherwise we might have to plan out a wearing schedule.)
Anyway, I ordered it from Target’s website and held my breath that it would fit. It came two days ago and fit great except the length. It was that weird in-between knee and tea-length that does nothing for me. So I spent all afternoon yesterday hemming it to the knee.
Unfortunately as I was finishing up tacking down the lining, a fold of the dress fabric got caught up under the needle of my sewing machine and when I ripped that mistake out, there was a tiny (but gaping) hole.
(Congratulations, you just cost yourself two more hours!)

(And yeah, I lost my waistline with Arianna. Sniff.)
(I know you love the jeans.)
The other thing I did was add some elastic to the sleeves, so they are gathered and a little capped, instead of sticking out a little bit like they were:

(Yes my mirror is dirty.)
The best part is, as Sarah mentioned, the dress will go right through spring and summer. AND it was less than $40.
Sigh.
I love a good dress.

Very nice! I think that is the most useful aspect of sewing: alterations. What a big difference! Sorry about the extra hours…been there, done that.
That is a very cute dress. Good work :)
Cute, cute, cute! And I see a waist there, regardless of what you say. :)
I can never find a good dress, thus, lots of pants. Love this one, you could always “sew” like me and just you safety pins, doesn’t take near as long. ;) Hopefully, I’ll see you soon!
I love it.
Very cute! I’m a dress girl myself too!
THAT is adorable — polka dots are happy-fabric :) And I can relate about the absentee waist-line. Mine never returned, I’m sorry to say. Actually, I think it just SANK, and became Baby Belly.
Hey Twin ;o)
Fun and creative work! I’d never have thought to do that to the sleeves. Sorry about the extra time on the hem….if I had a dime for every time I’ve made a dumb sewing mistake….I’d be rich enough to hire a seamstress!
Well, it’s SUPER cute and I am so impressed that you can even figure out how to amend something to make it cuter. Wowza.
I bought a Simplicity pattern for a cape last weekend (for Abbey to be Little Red Riding Hood) and evidently I’m not geting the simplistic part of the pattern. Sigh. It’s my weekend project. I’ll have to show you the finished project. Hopefully I’ll still have a few hairs left on my head.
brilliant move on the sleeves!
looks great!!
a cute dress that you look adorable in!!
i have no doubts that waist will be back in no time!
Man! I’d babysit for free for you to sew if you could sew me something thats THAT STINKIN CUTE! love it!
I got a shirt dress from Target clearance right after little E was born, wore it today…makes nursing SO much easier and it’s nice to have a dress…love the polka dots though! And your handy work, very nice.
SO cute!!! (i always make dumb mistakes when i’m sewing. like sewing the zipper in backwards or other such brilliant moves ;-)
I am loving this dress!! Shirtdresses are beautiful! Good job with the alterations – maybe a little tutorial on how you did the sleeves?
That is so cool! I especially love the sleeves. Now I’m inspired to get one of those dresses, and see what I can do with it! (I second the sleeve tutorial!)
Great dress! I love the altered sleeves…very nice detail.
It is so hard to find clothes to nurse in. I lucked up when Levi was tiny and found a couple of good nursing dresses.
Thanks for popping over to my blog and introducing yourself! :)
Love it! I may have to copy and purchase for June when our Baby girl is born. I love dresses too and am always in search of some good ones when nursing pops up in life.
