When the world seems to stop
I know there are worse things, that people deal with much worse around the world on a daily basis. But a mother never wants to see her child in pain, hurting, broken. It was an accident, and like most accidents, probably could have been avoided.
A carelessly slammed door, a tiny finger in the way. The ER doctor called it a partial amputation. Never thought that would ever happen to my child. We saw red and literally ran out the door. (Thankful for neighbors and sisters that can pick up where we leave off.)
She was a high priority patient and they got us into a trauma room within 20 minutes. The Child Life Specialist (who we knew!) was a godsend, brought us Sprite and toys and bubbles.
I’m pretty sure the nerves had been severed because she (mercifully) wasn’t seeming to feel much in her hand. She played while we waited. The nurse gave her two different meds to sedate her and they had the exact opposite effect. (WILD CHILD.) Dancing, jumping, laughing, yelling and bopping her head. She could hardly walk in a straight line. Would have been funny if…
We ended up having to burrito-wrap her and hold her down while the doctor worked. She wriggled and bossed the nurse the whole time. The doctor basically gave her an epidural in her finger; she couldn’t feel anything. (I made the mistake of looking and got dizzy.) The damage was right below her nail, she also had a hairline fracture. Now she has 7 or 8 stitches and a splint.
But with all that we went through, it could not have gone any smoother. We got back (close to 1 a.m.) to a picked-up house, dishes done, and laundry folded. (I could have kissed my sisters.)
SO thankful we were able to get the immediate care she needed, so thankful they were able to make her little finger whole again. So thankful babies heal quickly and thankful she won’t remember.

My heart just hurts for her…for all of you, really. I’m so sorry that happened, Moriah.
PS: That first picture of her goes with this post sooooo well. It looks like she wants to say: Don’t you feel sorry for me?
:)
Hey, will you message me with your cell number? I wanted to text you yesterday and realized I don’t have your number in my phone! Thanks!
Oh poor baby! I’m glad that she got the care that she needed and that she is young enough not to remember & heal. Sorry you had to go through it though! But yeah for wonderful sisters to help.

Poor baby and poor Mommy!! Look at her little face! I hope you get some much needed rest and good chocolate after all of that. At least, that’s what usually helps me!

so glad that the Lord knows the names of your children…His Children….b/c the entire time, we’ve been praying for Adelaide! *ugh*
Get well, Arianna!
oh that made me cry. she is so precious…glad it went as well as something like that possibly can.
Oh, Moriah!! What an ordeal! I’m also glad she’s little and won’t remember it. But — you said “partial amputation” but you also said, “they were able to make her little finger whole again.” Did they actually have to remove part of the finger, or not? Oh, I hope not! Also, was it actually her pinky, or another finger?
So, so sorry. These kinds of events are the ones that age you SO FAST. You can just feel the gray hairs, care lines, and heart palpitations growing on you. Glad she’s okay. Give her cute cheeks a kiss from me :)

Tab- that made me laugh. Someone else thought it was Adelaide, too. I guess that whole panic thing.
MK- This is really gross so I didn’t want to leave too graphic of details for those with a weak stomach. Her fingertip (right below the cuticle, so the whole nailbed, etc.) was off, attached in the back only by a tiny bit of skin. It was sooo alarming. I smushed it back on as best I could and we seriously ran out the door. We were both pretty covered in blood but it clotted well and stayed together until the digital block and he opened it to clean it out (that’s when I got dizzy). Sooo glad it’s over. And “whole again” – he stitched all around the entire finger except that tiny part where the skin was still intact. Ugh.
That first picture is priceless! Hope she is leaving that bandage on! Let me know if you can’t get out for something, I could pick it up and drop it off when I go to school. Love ya, dear!

Wow. The only other person I know whose child this happened to was a very responsible mother, also with 4 children. So you’re in good company. :)
That must’ve been so scary though! I’m glad she’s OK!
Oh my goodness, this brought tears to my eyes. Poor baby, poor Mama!! I have 4 kids, all of them little, and am always amazed when kids survive by a hair, from little things that could always be so much worse. Poor Arianna, this time it was worse for her. Hope she heals quickly.
Oooh! God is gracious amidst adversity! So glad that she was able to be seen and cared for so quickly and that her little finger has been put back together.

Oh goodness, Moriah! I would’ve gotten dizzy, too. Having anything happen to your kiddo is a shock. Sooo glad God was watching over your family!

Whoa! Poor little girl. Hoping the healing continues and that she is able to function with a little cast!
oh my goodness. i can’t imagine. praying for all of you and a speedy recovery for you little angel. love to you all.
Moriah, so sorry this happened to all of you! But I thought you might be interested to know that the very same thing happened to Dagney when she was little (although older than Arianna). The doctor stitched the top of her finger back on and it healed very well. It’s amazing how those little bodies can heal. I still remember when it happened to Dagney though–yikes!
Oh, poor thing! I’m impressed that you could hold it together enough to drive her to the ER! So glad she’s okay and that her little self is healing well. And that the ER was so wonderful to you! Did you take her to the children’s hospital?

Andy drove. YES! Definitely the children’s hospital. We learned our lesson by not going there when Drew gashed his knee a couple of years ago. Our pedi said ALWAYS go to the CH!
That made me shudder…I cannot imagine as a Mom. So sorry.
Moriah, I’m so sorry. My poor neighbor called me over in a panic with the exact same door/lil’finger situation. I’m so glad it’s behind you. Poor dear.
Poor baby! So sorry Moriah. Love her little pitiful pout though.
M- jer and I would have definitely both passed out if we were in your shoes! So glAd you kept your wits about you. I am so sorry baby girl had to go through this (uh, you too for that matter!). I hope she heals quickly! That first pic of her is a great one, totally tells the story! Hang in there, friend!
wow, poor little finger. Hopefully the healing will go quickly!

My heart practically stopped as I tried to speed read to the end to find out if she was okay! So grateful for a good hospital and way to go for keeping your cool. It’s amazing how God gives just the needed grace at the very moment you need it. You are a great mom!

I don’t comment very often, and get really behind in all my blog reading, but today I HAD to comment on this post! Oh, that picture! That face! It says it all. I’m so sorry that happened. Is there much worse than seeing our little ones in pain? I hope your mama heart heals as quickly as I know her little finger will.
And HOORAY for sisters!

I’m a stranger reading your blog, but I just wanted to let you know ~ I read this post in March, and I thought of it again this weekend, when we dealt with similar stuff … Our littlest guy had an accident involving a badly broken finger that required surgery. As we rushed to the ER, and stayed in the hospital all night, it was somehow comforting to know that somebody else’s baby had survived finger trauma, and had come home with that same bandaged-hand look. :-) Hope Arianna’s tiny finger is good as new now.
